EAA 430 FLYER Serving Northern Olympic Peninsula SEPTEMBER 2024 FROM THE LEFT SEAT – WITH RAY BALLANTYNE From the bugling of the elk to the honking of the geese training in formation flight, it appears the summer season is drawing to a close. But the fall weather still offers great flying conditions with cooler temperature, lower density altitudes, and beautiful scenery. We live in a beautiful place and seeing it from above is just spectacular. We just finished our Young Eagles season and I’m proud to report that we flew 131 young people. Here’s a shout out to Gordon Tubesing for most kids flown (26), and to Bud Davies and me who tied for most kids flown in a single place airplane (13). We also were the only two pilots who flew all three events! And of course, thanks to our pilots from other chapters who showed up to help. Brian Funk from Auburn only attended one event for us this year, but he gets top billing for flying 17 kids at a single event! We’re also busy helping two youths attend the Air Academy in OSH in 2025. Richard Howell is organizing “Build and Fly” this fall and working with the Boys and Girls Club to involve them with aviation. Barry and Tracy did a fantastic job organizing our annual poker run. The scholarship fund received $430.00, and our new Private Pilot Aiden Lara won the grand prize of 2 rounds of golf at the Cedars of Dungeness and 1 night at the 7 Cedars Hotel. A big thanks goes out to the donations from the Jamestown Tribe, A-1 Auto, Tedescos, and Ace Hardware. The building committee is diligently working on a design and cost estimate for our new meeting place. They have decided on a location and are now working on all the details involved with constructing a building. It is hoped that a proposal to the membership will be forthcoming in the next few months. The Gathering on September 28th will be the last one of the year at Bud’s hangar. After that we will go back to the Fairchild International Airport Conference Room for the winter-where it’s warm! Thanks, Bud, for generously offering the use of your hangar all these years.

Page 3 EAA 430 Flyer Jeff Smith Master Pilot Award Jeff Smith received the FAA Master Pilot award at last month’s Gathering. Jeff has flown for over 50 years, beginning with gliders in 1971. His career took him from flying in the Air Force, including B52’s and Jet Stars, to flying for American Airlines for 35 years. Ray gave a nice slide show of Jeff’s aviation career and the numerous aircraft he has flown and is still flying. Following that, Dwight Ford from the FAA FAAST Team presented Jeff with his Master Pilot certificate and plaque. Congratulations Jeff! Dwight Ford, Jeff Smith, girlfriend Kelly, and daughter Laurie

Page 4 EAA 430 Flyer Richard Howell gave a presentation at the August Chapter Gathering on his first ever attendance at Oshkosh AirVenture, including his flying there in his newly built Sling Too, and camping in the HomeBuilt Campground. He received a Perseverance Award for completing his project and bringing it to Oshkosh. Plus, he had a fabulous time with his friends and fellow EAA 430 members. If you missed the Gathering and want to hear more about it, just ask Richard. He’ll be happy to share his experience with you. Thank you, Richard, for a great presentation!

Page 6 EAA 430 Flyer AROUND THE WORLD 100 With Bob and Barry Through the UFO (United Flying Octogenarians) organization, Ken Brown met UFO members, Bob Bates and Barry Payne. Bob is from Papua New Guinea and Barry is from Australia. The two pilots are flying around the world in Barry’s Piper Comanche ZK-BAZ, commemorating a similar flight 100 years ago. They started their flight June 1 from Papua New Guinea, landing at Tacoma Narrows Airport (TIW) on September 9. Ken contacted UFO members in the area, asking them to meet and greet Bob and Barry. Several members from various towns in the area showed up, despite the inclement weather, driving instead of flying to the airport. When the plane touched down, they were greeted by a group of several UFOs and spent several hours with Bob and Barry, hearing the story of their flight. There will be several events in Seattle at the end of the month to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the start of the first successful aerial circumnavigation of the globe. Because of weather limitations, the two pilots left Tacoma on September 11 to finish their flight, heading to Alaska, Russia, Japan, Guam, and ending in Papua New Guinea at the end of the month. The first aerial circumnavigation of the world was completed in 1924 by four aviators from an eight-man team (pilots and mechanics) of the US Army Air Service, the precursor of the US Air Force. On 6 April 1924, four Douglas World Cruisers (DWC) left Sand Point near Seattle, Washington, and completed the first circumnavigation of the globe by air in 175 days on 28 September, after making 74 stops and covering about 27,550 miles. Two of the four aircraft crashed or were forced down at the beginning of the journey; the actual expedition was made for most of the flight with two single-engine open-cockpit DWC (the Chicago and the New Orleans) configured as floatplanes, especially developed by the Douglas Aircraft Company to meet a requirement from the US Army Air Service for an aircraft suitable for an attempt at the first flight around the world. https://applications.icao.int/postalhistory/aviation_history_aerial_circumnavigation.htm

Page 7 EAA 430 Flyer EAA 430 Big Poker Game Fly out Chair, Barry Halsted, hosted a poker run which took place during the months of July and August. Participants needed to fly to 5 airports and obtain WA passport stamps at each in order to enter the Poker Game. The big game was held immediately following the presentation at the August Gathering. There were 13 participants who sat at the table. Because we had 4 donated prizes, two hands were played, winners and prizes identified below. The entry fees and extra card purchases netted $430 for the Chapter Scholarship Fund! Great fun for all; think about joining in next year! Aidan Lara was the big winner of the Stay and Play Package donated by Seven Cedars. Newest chapter member Jim Pedlar came in second and chose the $50 Tedescos gift card. The second hand first place winner was Richard Howell. He chose the $50 Ace Hardware gift card. Second place went to Jeanne Hansen. Lucky Jeanne got the $50 gift card from A-1 Auto. Ernie will probably find something to buy there!

Page 9 EAA 430 Flyer Getting to Know Aidan Lara – by Skip Brown At age 3, Aidan looked up whenever he heard an airplane. He maintained that curiosity when, at age 8, he had his first Young Eagle flight at Sequim Valley Airport with Joe Platt in his C-150 in 2013. Joe Platt in his 1947Aeronca 7AC N82758 (Champ) Another YE ride with Pilot Joe YE Flight with Dan Masys in his RV-12 He became a regular at our Chapter YE 430 rallies. He enjoyed meeting the pilots who shared their stories and advice and became great supporters in his aviation adventures. He became a volunteer at our YE rallies and plans next year to give kids flights as the PIC. Aidan grew up in Sequim and graduated from Sequim High School in 2023. He is presently attending Peninsula Community College and plans to transfer to the University of Washington, majoring in Aerospace Engineering. His vocational aspirations as a young kid were to become a lawyer or a politician. One of his favorite endeavors in high school was debating. He now realizes aviation is the right path for his future. Joe and Aidan in his Cessna-150

Page 10 EAA 430 Flyer Three days before his check ride, he was practicing maneuvers at 4000’ when the engine began shaking and the RPMs were going down. He went through his check list and everything else seemed in order and working. When the shaking didn’t stop, he declared an emergency and, since he was close to W28, he had enough altitude to circle until in position to land and turn off the runway. Because of this “adventure,” he realized that because of all the training he had received from his instructor, Jack, he was able to perform the necessary measures to safely land the airplane. He received his PPL on August 6, 2024 His next aviation event happened on his cross-country solo to Pearson Field Airport (KVUO) in Vancouver, WA. Shortly before arriving, he realized he had lost radio contact with Flight Service; he could hear them, but they could not hear him. He switched to Portland Tower and safely landed at KVUO. He later was told the temporary loss of radio communication was caused by the aurora borealis which happened the night before his flight. Several aircraft had also experienced the same radio problem.
