EAA 430 FLYER Serving Northern Olympic Peninsula DECEMBER 2024 From the Left Seat With President Ray Ballantyne Greetings fellow aviation enthusiasts! Holiday Greetings! I hope you had a great Thanksgiving and are getting ready for Christmas. I’m feeling very thankful this year as my Christmas present came early…..a new plane! Lisa and I just fl ew back from Deming, NM with a new to me Glasair Sportsman. Now I can carry three Young Eagles at a time! I’m looking forward to seeing everyone at our Holiday Party on the winter solstice (Dec 21) starting at 5pm. It’s our biggest party of the year. Not only do we get a fancy meal and good company, but we get to recognize the people who keep our chapter gold. We are right in the middle of the birthing pains of our proposed chapter hangar. The building committee was hoping to have a proposal by the holiday party, but it will stretch into next year. But soon! Very soon! I would like to thank Scott Fitzgerald for his efforts with our chapter and for being our communications chair. Scott recently resigned the position and will be replaced by Erik Peterson. Eric’s job as Membership Chair will be combined with the Treasurer and Tracy will do both. I’m also excited to announce that Linda Priddle has joined the board of directors as the Newsletter Editor. This is her fi rst newsletter. Thanks to everyone who volunteers for the good of all. I’m energized about all that we accomplished as a chapter this past year and excited about what will happen in 2025. May your Christmas presents be as good as mine! Ray

The weather forecast for early December has included a growing number of days with rain likelihood 35% or higher and people tend to get busier as the holidays get closer. So this day was picked with fingers crossed and the flight from Sequim to Arlington was beautiful. Non-threatening clouds and crystal clear air really made the Northwest’s features stand out. Mt Baker was magnificent. Our luncheon venue was Ellie’s at the Airport, a restaurant known for its good food and view of the aviation activities there. Five airplanes brought Ray and Lisa Ballantyne, Bud Davies with Aidan Lara, John Ward, Richard Howell, and Tracy and I to the adjacent airplane parking area by 12:45 and shortly we were seated next to each other at two tables for four. Conversation was lively and we watched a variety of aircraft enjoying the day as well. My favorite there is their Blue Cheese and Bacon Burger and the amount of crumbly cheese beat anything I’ve had all year! We departed Arlington with excellent visibility and some clouds whose bases had dropped some but they were no bother and added immensely to the scenery in the area. Richard’s photos give you the idea. Our next planned flyout will be posted in January; May it be as much fun as this one! Barry PAGE 1 2 2 3 4 4 6 7 8 9

Page 6 EAA 430 Flyer The Sex Life of an Exhaust Valve Doesn’t get more provoca ti ve than that. Was that reason for the good turn out at the gathering? For our November program, fellow EAA member George Steed from Chapter 406, Bremerton shared some fi ery details about the exhaust valves typically found in the Con ti nental and Lycoming engines that power our small general avia ti on aircra ft and the exci ti ng lives they lead. High temperatures and millions of opera ti ons exact a high toll on the valves, especially if the engine isn’t carefully operated according to manufacturers recommenda ti ons. There are several things we can do to keep an eye on the health of these valves. George recounted things like compression checks and borescope inspec ti ons that can help us evaluate the condi ti on of the valves and to detect early signs of stress or pending trouble. An exhibit of several exhaust valves were passed around to let us see di ff erences between normal and worn valves. Several photos showed what can happen if valve trouble progresses to catastrophic failure. There are fortunately some things that can be done if issues are detected. George summarized “staking” and “valve lapping” techniques that can improve the sea ti ng and sealing of the valves to slow concerning trends. He also men ti oned things like worn valve guides that may require more extensive measures to correct. Good informa ti on like George presented is interes ti ng, useful and appreciated. Ray, What is, “how many Young Eagles have the EAA flown so far.
Page 7 EAA 430 Flyer Interview with Jasmin Stamper submitted by Skip Brown Hello, my name is Jazmin C. Stamper, and I’m 16 years old. I currently have no pilot’s license, or an airplane for that ma tt er. I was born in Sequim and have lived here since. When I was growing up, I never really thought much about what I was going to be, but I knew it had something to do with arts and cra ft s. A ft er going to the EAA Young Eagles and taking my fi rst small aircra ft fl ight, there was something about fl ying that made me want to pursue it and do more with it. Other than avia ti on, I make polymer clay gnomes on wood rounds and polymer clay dragons. I sell them at a consignment shop in Sequim. I also like to listen to music and love to learn about nature. The last EAA Young Eagles fl ight I went on was in July or August 2024 and I was fl ying with Ray Ballantyne. A ft er he took o ff , he let me fl y his airplane along the fl ight path. Along the way, he fl ew the plane up and down so I could feel it. Going down and the feeling of the plane falling faster than you are was a weird feeling, yet very fun to experience. As we were star ti ng our descent towards the runway, we were too high, so he did a forward slip to lose al ti tude. It was the same feeling but more concerning since we were closer to the ground, and to fi nish it o ff , it was a nice landing. I love the feeling of being in the air, the feeling of not having to worry about the world below, and being in the moment. I think the best part of avia ti on is even if you have a scary, hard, or di ffi cult experience while fl ying the aircra ft or as a passenger, you will always be back for more. Welcome New Member Jazmin Stamper Personal addendum to this article … Jazmin was an exciting participant in the EAA Build and Fly Program in 2023. She was one of nearly 20 participants who started the program, but the only one who completed it. She worked well in the construction of the RC model LT-40, but where she really excelled was on the simulator. Robert Ball worked with her and in no time she was very competent, ready to move on to a real flight. I watched that flight From a distance in total awe. I actually thought Robert was demonstrating maneuvers, but it was Jazmin, flying like she’d been doing it for years. The Olympic Silent Flyers and the Build and Fly volunteers are very proud of her accomplishments and look forward to watching her spread her wings in the future. Linda Priddle, OSF Treasurer
I received my PPL in 1982. My father and I took ground school while I was a freshman in high school. We received our license the same day, although he received his about an hour earlier. I also have my Instrument ra ti ng, as well as AMEL. I’m ren ti ng from Rite Brothers currently as I await the arrival of my plane from the Czech Republic, manufactured by JMB aircra ft , model VL3 916is with full IFR capabili ti es and oxygen. I lived in South Lyon MI, Phillips WI, Ironwood MI, Two Rivers WI, Manitowoc WI and now Port Angeles WA since Sept 2024. As a kid, air shows were a favorite event. I s ti ll remember the fi rst ti me I saw the Blue Angles in person, visi ti ng the Wright Paterson Air Force Base while in Boy Scouts, as well as the Johnson Space Center. My wife, Joanna, is a re ti red physician and I re ti red from owning an injec ti on molding company with my family, which we sold in 2010. Joanna and I also owned and operated the largest Alpaca Ranch in Wisconsin un ti l dives ti ng in 2020. We enjoy being outdoors and enjoying all the Olympic Peninsula has to o ff er, speci fi cally hiking and biking. I will pick up a golf club occasionally. I’ve volunteered with EAA for Air Adventure on the fl ight line as well as giving tours at the EAA Museum. A Note of Thanks This is my fi rst newsle tt er, and a li tt le late. I want to thank you all for your pa ti ence, but most of all your encouragement. Stepping into your world has been such a joy. Not only am I fi nally ful fi lling a life-long passion, but I’m doing it with the greatest people! Linda Priddle Page 8 EAA 430 Flyer Welcome New Members Rob and Joanna Stephens
