EAA 430 FLYER Serving Northern Olympic Peninsula APRIL 2025 From the Left Seat With President Ray Ballantyne Happy Spring, Everyone! The temperatures are warming, the clouds are parting, and it’s time to go flying. Tell your friends to check out Flying Start at the Fairchild Conference Room on Saturday May 17 starting at 10:00 a.m. Harry Cook will describe and discuss all forms of aviating. There continues to be a lot of activity with the building committee as we finalize our plan for a clubhouse/ hangar. Please join us Wednesday May 14 in the Legends Room at the Cedars Golf Course at 5:00 p.m. for a fund-raising pledge dinner. We will share our plans and projections. It’s really exciting to be part of EAA430. We just received notification that we have received the GOLD chapter recognition for 2024! Our Young Eagles credits have come in, and our Ray Scholarship recipient Gunner Rogers just earned his Instrument Airplane rating. I’m also proud to announce that this year my son Dan finished his Instrument rating, Commercial Pilot, and Multi engine rating. How about that! Many have requested that we hold a swap meet/flea market sale for all our unneeded airplane stuff. Well, I have talked to three other chapters, and there will be a joint chapter sale at Bremerton Airport on August 9. Unfortunately, this conflicts with Diamond Point Day and Unity of Effort. It’s hard to schedule in the summer. Lisa and I are taking a belated anniversary trip to Laguna Beach at the end of the month, so we won’t be at the April Gathering. The presentation on mid-air collision avoidance will be from Major Wahl from JBLM. And it’s spring, so we will be meeting in Bud’s Hangar 15 at Sequim on April 26 to hear him. I’m sorry to announce that long longtime EAA member Bob Nagy passed away during our last gathering. I hope to provide more information of his history with EAA in the future. And I hope to have my airplane back from the avionics shop soon. It’s time to go flying!

Page 3 EAA 430 Flyer This is the first of a series of articles written by former Young Eagles WHERE ARE THEY NOW DANIEL WEAVER I have been interested in aviation for as long as I can remember. When I was growing up my family and I did a lot of airline flying and I was always in awe of the mechanical complexity of the giant metal tubes hurtling through the air at 500mph. At a very young age I had made up my mind that I wanted to be a pilot when I grew up. However, given that none of my family members were pilots I didn’t really have anyone who could guide me on the first steps to becoming a pilot. As a present for my 13th birthday my aunt took me to my first Young Eagles rally in Sequim. At the rally I got the opportunity to take the controls of an RV-9 and for the first time it started to feel like learning to fly was an achievable goal. As part of the Young Eagles program the EAA provides a free online private pilot ground school which I started vigorously studying. The free ground school gave me a strong foundation of knowledge which came in handy my senior year of high school I when was fortunate enough to receive a scholarship which covered part of the cost of my PPL. Since then I have gone on to pursue my commercial pilot and flight instructor ratings and I am now working as a charter pilot and instructor at KCLM and doing my best to set my students up for success.

Page 4 EAA 430 Flyer April Flyout to Arlington - Quite the Airshow!! Friday, April 4, provided us with green grass, blue skies, warm temperatures and light winds. What a nice day for a flyout! Apparently, others agreed; eleven airplanes carrying 18 adventurous souls met in front of Ellie’s restaurant at the Arlington Airport for lunch. Our scheduled arrival was to be 11:30, allowing time for photographs before traipsing over to the restaurant for lunch. Amazingly, all were on time! Those arriving included John Ward in his Pipistrel Sinus, Ken and Skip Brown in their RV-9A, Scott Alair with Sid Vandiver in Scott’s Lancair Legacy, Richard Howell in his Sling, Carl and Deanna Hicks in their Cessna 180, Jay Pearlman in his J-3 replica, Jeff Smith in his RV-8A, Rick and Donna Stoffel in their RV-4, Bill and Dot Shepherd in their Swift, Bud Davies and Scott Brooksby in Bud’s Cessna 152, and, of course, Tracy and myself in our Piper PA-11. Where was our fearless chapter president? Ray Ballantyne normally attends our flyouts, even if it means missing a highly anticipated golf game, but this time his ride was in Oregon having new avionics installed. More costly than lunch! It’s always a challenge for the restaurants we visit on our flyouts to seat people in a large group near each other. Most do a great job, as did Ellie’s this day. Seating took three tables which were adjacent, allowing visible communication for all and audible communication among most. Windows provided views of airplanes taking off and landing, what more could we ask for? Service was excellent – hats off for Ellie’s! Our flyouts allow get together time in a relaxed atmosphere not found in our other chapter activities. Seating arrangements result in new friendships and conversations include all kinds of subjects. Every time I attend one of these, I learn something new about the people that have come. I noticed as Tracy and I taxied for departure that several conversations were still ongoing on the ramp. The flight home for Tracy and me was smooth with wonderful views of mountains, water and islands, and we enjoyed the memories we shared and stories we heard. I’m sure the others that gathered at Ellie’s today had a similar experience. Barry
