EAA 430 FLYER Serving Northern Olympic Peninsula AUGUST 2025 From the Left Seat With President Ray Ballantyne Hello EAA 430 This month’s Le- Seat is dedicated to our building project. We have been through a challenging <me trying to establish a home for the chapter. Beginning in early 2020, Sequim Valley Airport (SVA) was asked if we could build there. The general area where the exis<ng trailer sits and the area to the west was suggested as a good loca<on. SVA was willing to provide a long term lease at no cost. In May of 2024, SVA changed the loca<on offered on the airport excluding the trailer site. We agreed to the site north of the new hangar and worked with SVA on a 50 year lease. Because of county requirements we found that water was a necessity and was not easily obtained. Exploring all op<ons, the building commiQee looked at Pt Angeles Fairchild Airport and found a double hangar available for sale with all u<li<es. It seemed like a slam dunk, but the condominium owners voted against EAA430 having a chapter home there. Looking back at SVA, we have received a third proposed lease of 30 years at no charge and this is their final offer. While there is a possible building site at Fairchild, we need to decide whether we accept or decline the SVA lease proposal before August 30, 2025. Discussion with the Board of Directors will take place on August 22. The Board will then present the issues involved to the membership. A-er that there will be an email ballot to each member to determine if we agree with the SVA lease proposal. There will be more informa<on provided in the days ahead, but the decision has to be provided to SVA by August 30. I’m confident it won’t be long before we’re in our new home. Ray

Her parents were steadfast in their support and that makes all the difference. She quickly picked up the simulator flying and went on to the LT-40 that had been built. I watched her first flight with Robert Ball at the Olympic Silent Flyers field. I thought Robert was giving a demonstration flight - solid, level, controlled… It was Jazmin flying! Now she has gone on to solo for real! Fair Winds, Jazmin. We are all so proud of you.

Page 4 EAA 430 Flyer Most flyouts are planned within a few days of the flight so that the weather forecasts don’t stretch over a long period of <me. But our July flyout was mapped out far in advance to match Concretes annual fly-in. And while it appeared good weather would prevail, such was not the case. Flyout day arrived with fog and low clouds. The forecast called for improvement so I watched closely, but 9:00 am came and it was s<ll IFR in the area. For the first <me ever I extended the flyout go/no go <me, announced I was not ready to give up, and asked all wan<ng this flyout to happen to s<ck it out for a while. By 11:00 am the cloud cover between Arlington and Skagit was 1400 - and visibility was 10 miles. While VFR, the cloud cover was less than my criteria for flyouts of this distance so I cancelled it. In doing so I advised that Concrete’s fly-in was in full swing and that Tracy and I intended to proceed on our own. Bud Davis said he was also going so the three of us (two airplanes) met up with Ray and Lisa Ballantyne and Richard and Mary Ann Howell for lunch. They and many others had camped. But what about a true July FlyOut? Wednesday and Thursday were looking good, so I emailed our members that we’d make Friday Harbor on Wednesday our July Flyout. We could meet at noon for photos. Naturally Wednesday arrived with fog and low clouds. Slowly the fog li-ed but low clouds prevailed. By go no-go <me (9:00) the islands were scaQered or clear and Port Angeles was VFR. The flyout was a go! By 11:00 Port Townsend was clear, too. So off we went. Nine of us (John Ward, Aidan Lara and Emilee WestcoQ, Bud Davies and ScoQ Brooksby, and Richard and Mary Ann Howell, and Tracy and myself) arrived in <me for photos and the walk into town. Lunch was at the Downrigger Restaurant followed by ice cream on the way back. July was a busy flyout month. Hopefully August will be a bit more peaceful! July FlyOut Sequim this July did not experience our usual weather. We had less sun and more wind for sure. Both affected our flyouts. I say flyouts (plural) because we tried twice.

Learning about all she had to conquer to make this flight was a study in skill and persistence. Deanna completed it in 2 days out of the allocated <me of 4 days!! While sick! And if sick wasn’t enough, the turbulence, heat and bad weather at the start of hurricane season flying across the states was hell for her. Hats off to this strong, capable lady!! Page 7 EAA 430 Flyer Date: July 26, 2025 ● Chapter President Ray Ballantyne called the Membership Gathering to order at 1005, hangar #15 at Sequim Valley Airport. ● Ray led The Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag with 41 members and 1 guest aQending. ● Guests - Chapter member Jay Pearlman introduced his brother, Richard ● June Gathering Minutes were approved as wriQen. ● Correspondence - EAA HQ sent our banner, Gold for 2024. There have been ongoing exchanges between our Building CommiQee and Sequim Valley Airport board and also the Port Of Port Angeles (Fairchild Airport) about leases and other building topics. Old Business ● Treasury Tracy Halsted - (Ray) reported funds of approximately $5500 for scholarship, $2870 opera<ng and just about $220,000 in our building fund. The majority of the building fund money is in CDs, earning interest. ● Membership Tracy Halsted - Paid membership now stands at 110. ● Scholarship Dave Miller - (Ray and Dave) noted that we’ve two of our kids aQending EAA Air Academy this year. Nathan Nelson has just returned home. Jazmin Stamper has just arrived at Oshkosh with EAA AirVenture running at full power. ● Build and Fly Richard Howell - (Richard) has ini<ated a small email campaign to share plans about our next Build and Fly event. The mailing targeted only parents (and kids) who have indicated interest during our Radio Control Simulator sessions at a couple of Young Eagles events last year. Richard showed the plans for a small hand launched glider “Jr’s Pride”, built from balsa, that we can use to explore and learn model building skills. We’ll also have our “Silly S<ck” R/C trainer to give aQending kids a hands-on flight experience. We’re wai<ng for responses to decide next steps. ● Young Eagles Bud Davies - (Bud) lead off with a request for volunteer pilots. We already have 38 kids signed up for our August event in Port Angeles. Young Eagles flight experiences that our volunteers provide, have repeatedly demonstrated to be significant moments of inspira<on for kids to build on - not only learning to fly, but also as they con<nue on with their educa<on and career tracks. ● Fly-out Barry Halsted - (Barry) reported that the July fly-out to Mears Field (3W5), Concrete, WA was unfortunately canceled, due to weather - low cloud ceilings. Nevertheless, a few folks ventured out on their own, as Concrete was hos<ng its annual fly-in event. Look for Friday Harbor (KFHR) to be our alternate des<na<on for July. o Poker Run Scholarship Fundraiser - August and September will be the <me to get five (5) Washington Pilots Associa<on (WPA) Passport Stamps on your entry form. 17 airports are listed. Engine Dehydrator Plans by Erik Petersen Commercial engine dehydrators are available with various features, including self- recharging silica, and typically cost around $1,200. Considering the price range of $50k-$100k for an engine, this cost is rela<vely minor. An alterna<ve approach involves purchasing a larger quan<ty of silica gel than needed, allowing for the silica to be swapped out when it requires recharging. The used silica can be taken home, baked, and reused for subsequent cycles. This method costs approximately $100. The engine dehydrator can be assembled in under an hour, though sourcing the parts may take longer than the assembly itself. The mechanism is straighxorward. See Figure 1 and the design in Figure 2 for reference. The required parts include air<ght containers, one of which should be large enough to accommodate the air pump. The link below will give the complete assembly instruc<ons. I promised Erik to include this info in the last two newsletters…Here it is, finally. I’ve just included the intro and the link to simplify access. https://eaa430.org/wp- content/uploads/2025/07/diy- engine-dehydrator- compressed.pdf Page 9 EAA 430 Flyer
