EAA 430 FLYER Serving Northern Olympic Peninsula SEPTEMBER 2025 From the Left Seat With President Ray Ballantyne It’s been a great summer to aviate in the Paci fi c Northwest. There have been many fl yins and fl youts, and I just returned from a great fl yin at the Western An ti que Aeroplane and Automobile Museum (WAAAM) in Hood River. During the pilot’s dinner, our own Bill Sheppard was recognized as the oldest pilot fl ying in with his Aero 45 twin. There’s more fl ying to be done, as we gather our airport stamps for the annual Poker Run! I wanted to take this opportunity to thank the board of directors for their service these past two years. Our board has worked hard to provide good leadership for our chapter. Not only have we accomplished a lot, but we have had a good ti me doing it. There will be elec ti ons of o ffi cers for the next two years coming soon. Nothing new to report from the building commi tt ee. We con ti nue to look for the best opportunity to get our own clubhouse. Congratula ti ons to Rob Stephens on the delivery of his new VL3 which is the world’s fastest UL aircra ft . Powered by a Rotax engine, his plane will go over 200 mph. As the summer comes to a close, we will be mee ti ng at Bud’s hangar #15 at SVA for the last ti me in 2025 on September 27th. We will talk about MOSAIC and have a BIG poker game! In October, we will return to the conference room at Fairchild Interna ti onal for our Gatherings. Back by popular demand, we have scheduled up another Chili Bingo night in the conference room at 5:00 p.m. on October 23rd. This will be a Chili cook o ff , so if you would like to enter the contest with your special chili, contact Charlie or Kevin Tracy. Also, if you have a great bingo prize you would like to donate, please let me know. Not only does that increase dona ti ons, it also relieves some of the burden of pu tti ng on the event. Wishing you clear skies and tail winds, Ray

Page 5 EAA 430 Flyer Orcas Island Flyout Wow! We had a great ti me at the Orcas Island fl yout on August 12. This was one of our more unusual fl youts because lunch choices included mul ti ple downtown restaurants in Eastsound or a picnic at the airport. And most chose the picnic! Nine airplanes brought sixteen people to the island. Emily Westco tt , Aidan Lara and his mother Sondra Pedlar fl ew up in Emily’s C172, then wandered into town for lunch. The rest of us picnicked where we watched quite a few airplanes takeo ff and land, but mostly just cha tt ed and behaved like long lost friends. “We” were Ken (Brownie) and Skip Brown (RV9), Bill and Dot Shepherd (Swi ft ), Dave and Joan Miller (180 hp Legend Cub), Chris ti Masi (Murphy Elite), John Ward (Pipistrel Sinus), Richard and Mary Ann Howell (Sling 2), Terry Smith (PA-11), and Ray Ballantyne fl ew with me in my PA-11. A ft er lunch several of the picknickers walked into town for dessert. The day was warm with very few clouds, and winds were light. Some of us fl ew directly to Orcas Island, others fl ew up along the west side of Whidbey Island and cut over toward our des ti na ti on when we were north of Whidbey Naval Air Sta ti on. Ray and I fl ew along Whidbey both ways so we got to see Decep ti on Pass twice. But either way the day was gorgeous and the all the scenery was beau ti ful. Mt Baker stood out to the east and all the islands were visible. What a great way to spend the day! Barry

Page 7 EAA 430 Flyer The light plane easy tug, or in reality the easy pull. The concept of how to get the plane back in the hangar has been an inven ti ve process for many pilots. While we can easily pull the plane out to the ramp in front of the hangar (usually with a li tt le downhill slope) the e ff ort to push it back is more di ffi cult. I currently have a Van’s RV 9A with an empty weight of about 1000 with full fuel. My plane is normally full when in the hangar. My tools to put the plane in the hangar consists of: • A Standard towbar and a Harbor Freight Badland ZXR 2500# ATV/U ti lity Winch with a Wire Rope and remote control. This is a 12V unit. $80.00 • I have a 12V car ba tt ery on a tender for my use. (I had limited power in the condo hangar) • I also replaced the wire rope which came with the winch with nylon rope with a +350# li ft ing capacity. $20.00 Home Depot Resources Harbor Freight On the shelf Battery w/ charger Ready for next time Straps with Remote

The EAA 430 Board of Directors came together for a great dinner on Saturday September 13, 2025, at Kevin and Charlie Tracy’s wonderful home. It was a ti me to review the contribu ti ons of all our directors and enjoy good food and company. There were a variety of party gi ft s from Charlie, but the best ones were received by Joan Miller and Bud Davies. A BIG thank you for all the work the board members accomplish.
